Living the dream

Footy came to the party once again and provided us with lucky crew shirts, thanks buddy

It has been a great week here, the Praia festival is just getting fired up and we've been generally having a ball - working hard on the boat during the day and killing our livers come night time.

The DB is now ready to go and we're planning to sail tomorrow (Saturday 2nd Aug) most likely straight to Brighton. We've had a few hold ups (the mainsail got lost in Lisbon but has arrived yesterday) and now we're champing at the bit.

Glory lacks a little hand / eye co-ordination when it comes to eating

Its been great to see Dan and Glory again and they are planning to sail the same time as us. They both did a great job of giving me my 3rd birthday party for the week, and morning glory made a great cake to celebrate the mast being put back in the boat ;-) . And as always our good local friends here have been great at making our stay that much better, cheers guys.

We have had two 'sea trials', the first at 2am (a little spontaneous) and yesterday we actually took the boat for a sail. Was soooo good and it was a great sense of achievment for Jas, Smarty and me as all of the hard work had finally come together.

The weather looks settled at least for the next few days so will be nice to ease into it. I think we're still on track to make the party in Brighton on Sat 16th, Dad will be updating our progress in the comments if your interested.

This is a great thing for me, honestly over the last year all my spare time has been spent dreaming about getting back on with this trip. Now we're living it and i can't wait ;-)

Yeeeeeeeee haaaaaaaaaaaaaa love to all Jonboy, Jas and Smarty xoxoxoxoxoxoxoxoxo

The boys on DB left at roughly 12GMT Sat 2 August and head Northeast, which is on the rhumbline to Brighton.
They had a good look at the weathermap and are not worried about a low coming in their direction. The low won't last long.Wind at the moment in the area SW about 10 knots.
As soon as I hear more, I will update with a position , HJ

Hey you two! Heard from Hendrik that you are en route from the Azores to Brighton. It would be good to see you and DB if you are able to stop at the beautiful island of Jersey on the way!
Anne and Hendrik will explain who the heck we are and coordinate things

They covered 110nm in the last 24 hours. A lot of wind(about 25kn), but that should ease in the next 12 hours to about 15kn.Still from behind. The forecast is not bad, may be a bit more wind and a shift to the N on Thursday. Hj

Last Position @ 7.30 GMT 9-9-08:
47.29N 11.15W
Still plenty of wind SW around 20kn. Hitting the bar probably late Saturday night or early Sunday morning. This is where the difference in depth in the Ocean can create a very uncomfortable swell. Suddenly it goes from 2000 and 3000 meters to between 80 to 200meters. They are speeding along at about 7nm per Hour with main reefed. Good stuff, HJ

Just a quick post to let you know that the boys are due in at the Brighton Marina in the next 30-45 mins, the mainsail tore in half with only 38 miles to go - bugger! but they still made great progress. No doubt Jon will update this tonight/tomorrow with more details! Cheers Renae

Arrived in Brighton 12-8-08 about 5pm local time with ripped main and problems with the furling. Stormy conditions, but I am sure it didn't matter. The beer must have tasted very special indeed.Well done guys!!
For me it has been very special to forecast the weather and try to advice you where to go. Sorry for guiding you towards the rocks in the Channel, I am glad you realised that the oldboy had a moment of complete insanity to make a way point on the beautiful Devon hills. Next time I will rely solely on the charts and not "google earth'! It's been great fun and I can't wait to see you soon and hear all the stories first hand. HJ

Dear mighty mariners...
I am sooooo proud of you all.
A life on the ocean waves, sailing in gale force 8 with half a mainsail flying must have been quite a sight!! here comes Double Bruyn in true style zooming into Brighton Marina, Kiwi flag flying & crew hanging out for a beer...
I like that 'being baptised by a wave ' bit Jon!!I knew you'd get baptised somehow!! And so for that Irish blessing 'May the wind be always at your back' that I bestowed on your fair boat... It seemed to work in full force.
Suffice it to say it's been a great journey for all of us & I will miss our table covered entirely by charts & computer weather maps.. yes I look at it!
Love you crazy guys heaps.. can't wait to party on with you, love Mum
